Driving in UAE

UAE offers left hand driving. It has one of the highest traffic accident rates in the world and the main cause of car accidents is speeding and reckless driving. Therefore, strict and exorbitant fines are levied for disobeying the traffic rules. Here are some of the general road rules are:

  • High beam lights are required on roads with no overhead lighting and only to improve the view ahead (no signaling).

  • Intoxicated or drunk driving is strictly prohibited regardless of the amount (prescribed medicines should be checked with a doctor or pharmacist).

  • Hand held mobile phones are not to be used while driving.

  • Overtaking in circumstances of reduced view is prohibited.

  • Seat belts are required for the driver and front-seat passenger.

  • Heavy fines are levied for Disobeying road signs, Driving dangerously, Red light jumping, Overtaking on hard shoulders, Exceeding speed limits, Parking on un-marking parking spaces, etc.
